AN Australian man was charged with murdering a female Chinese student in Sydney after she fell to her death from her apartment balcony in an apparent attempt to flee the intruder, a Sydney Morning Herald report said today.
Brendan David Dennison, 26, was taken to Central Local Court this morning in Sydney but refused to leave his cell for the brief hearing. He did not apply for bail, the report said.
Dennison was charged with 21 offences including the murder of Wei Liao, 18, a native of Sichuan Province, five counts of rape and inciting the four victims in the apartment to perform sexual acts on each other and with him, the report said.
Wei's Korean boyfriend, Chris Han, 19, also fell off the balcony shortly after. He survived, but suffered a broken back, pelvis and legs. Both Wei and Han were naked when they fell off the balcony. Another female roommate and female friend were also in the apartment. They were unharmed.
Police said Dennison followed the couple's female friend into the apartment building about noon on Sunday and forced his way into the flat with a knife, the report said.
A Chengdu Evening News report said Han picked up a knife and tried to fight the suspect. But Han gave up the knife after the suspect threatened the life of one of the women.
The suspect took away nearly 200 Australian dollars (US$136) before fleeing, the report said. Police haven’t confirmed whether the suspect had targeted them for long.
Wei's mother Wu Liping arrived in Sydney this morning. The report said Wu is a famous businesswoman who owns a supermarket in Jiangyou City, Sichuan.
Daniel Sheen, a lawyer acting for the victim's family, told Sydney Morning Herald that the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan had destroyed Wu's home and supermarket.
"She's lost her home, her business and now she's lost her only child," Sheen was quoted as saying in the report.
