【史記正義】輿地志云：越侯傳國三十餘葉，歷殷至周敬王時，有越侯夫譚，子曰允常，拓土始大，稱王，
允常, probably a transliteration, was the name or title of the first Yue king (王). It was translated as 『元常』 in 【吳越春秋】 (越之興霸自元常矣), in which 元 carries the connotation of 始 "first" (like 始皇帝; 《爾雅·釋詁》元，始也) as well as its regular meanings of 長 "long" (《廣韻》元，長也) and 大 "big" (《前漢·哀帝紀》夫基事之元命。《註》師古曰：更受天之大命). My guess is that 允常 is a synonymous compound, meaning 高大長久 in 古越語 (允 OC *ʎiwən < Proto-Austroasiatic *luaŋ "long, high, big"; 常 OC *ʑǐaŋ < Proto-Austroasiatic *ʒʔoŋ "high, long").
